How is a Facelift Performed?

Depending on your individual needs, there are several types of facelifts available. Some facelifts rejuvenate the upper area of the face, while other lifts focus on the lower two-thirds. Some procedures are a bit more invasive than others. It’s very common for women and men to undergo a brow lift, forehead lift, or BOTOX® and fillers to enhance the results. Some of the more known facelift methods include:

Full Facelift

A common surgery for older adults, a full or “traditional” facelift generally incorporates an incision along the hairline, extending down to the temples, stopping near the base of the ears. The deeper layer of facial muscles is gently stretched and tightened to create a lifted look, which smooths excessive lines and wrinkles. The traditional facelift is appropriate for women and men with more extensive facial aging. During a full facelift, many treatments may be blended, including upper or lower blepharoplasty to address the eyes or neck reduction for the lower region.

Mid Facelift

The mid-facelift (cheeks) addresses the sagging near the cheekbones and the upper jaw. The mid-facelift works nicely for those who seek improvement to the middle or lower region of the face and want to create a more defined jawline by removing jowls.

Lower Facelift

This facelift approach corrects the neck and chin and sometimes the jowls. Methods of a non-surgical facelift in Long Island, such as laser skin tightening or Kybella, can also be applied to create a youthful, defined jawline and a softer, tighter neck.

What to Expect from Facelift Surgery in Long Island

No matter which facelift approach is right for you, the primary goal is to create a gorgeous and visually appealing result. Most facelift surgeries are performed with general anesthesia. The time frame of the procedure depends on the extent of the surgery and whether other treatments are combined. Following your facelift, you can expect swelling and puffiness, slight to moderate pain, and soreness, which can all be controlled by prescription pain medication. Most patients feel and physically look better after two to four weeks. You can expect a softer, more youthful appearance that appears natural and refreshed. Overall, your face looks younger and subtly rejuvenated.

What Will My Facelift Recovery Entail?

After a facelift, you will wake up with a surgical dressing to help reduce swelling and small drains that remove excess fluids and blood from the body. A caregiver will need to drive you home. Our team will prescribe pain medications to help keep you comfortable for the first few days after surgery. After that, most patients are able to switch to over-the-counter painkillers. Bruising and swelling usually peak within 3-4 days post-op.

You will need to keep your head elevated while you sleep, so investing in some sturdy pillows is a wise idea. Within the first week of recovery, you are advised to take gentle walks, which helps improve circulation and mood. Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully, and be sure to attend all your follow-up visits. Most patients can return to work within a few weeks, provided they have sedentary jobs. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be postponed for 4-6 weeks.

Which Facelift is Right for You?

Our facelift in Long Island can turn back the hands of time and leave you looking youthful, refreshed, and rejuvenated. This treatment is geared to gracefully navigate each decade of life’s journey. During your private consultation, our caring team will evaluate your skin’s elasticity and thickness, as well as your unique aesthetic concerns, to determine the best techniques for your surgery.

A full facelift is the conventional approach known as the gold standard in facial rejuvenation. It corrects midface sagging, jowls, and wrinkles, sharpen the jawline, and rejuvenate the neck.

Our surgeons tailor the type of facelift to your specific needs. This can be a deep plane facelift, a SMAS flap facelift, or a combination of both.

Facelift FAQ

What is the cost of a facelift?

Facelift surgery is tailored to the individual, so it is difficult to give a price quote prior to a thorough physical evaluation and discussion of the patient’s goals. Many factors affect the price, including the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, postoperative garment fees, and others. Our team will provide a detailed quote at the time of your private consultation.

What’s the difference between a facelift and a neck lift?

A facelift focuses on the middle and lower two-thirds of the face, treating the cheeks and jawline, while a neck lift primarily addresses the neck, zeroing in on issues such as vertical bands, submental fullness, and 'turkey neck.' Neck lifts are typically done along with facelifts in our practice. A deep plane neck lift addresses a heavy and obtuse neck. During a deep plane neck lift, deep structures such as subplatysmal fat, digastric muscle, and submandibular glands are reduced to give you the sharpest and most rejuvenated neck appearance.

When should someone consider non-surgical alternatives?

Younger patients who have retained good skin elasticity but who wish to correct wrinkles and sunken facial contours may be able to obtain their desired results with a liquid facelift. Changes are temporary, however. For those with more pronounced skin sagging, jowls, and loss of definition in the jawline, a surgical facelift is considered the gold standard in anti-aging techniques. In some patients with early facial aging changes, a short scar facelift under local anesthesia can be offered.

Are facelift results permanent?

While facelift results are long-lasting, the procedure does not stop the natural aging process. For this reason, some patients may need another surgery within 10-15 years. You can extend the results of your facelift by following a healthy diet and exercise regimen, minimizing stress, not smoking, avoiding harmful UV rays, getting adequate rest, and drinking plenty of water.

Will I have scars from the procedure?

Our board-certified surgeons use advanced techniques to help minimize postoperative scarring. Nevertheless, any time an incision is created, a scar will form. Most scarring is hidden within the hairline and behind the ears with a facelift, so patients will look refreshed and rejuvenated without any telltale signs of cosmetic intervention.

What are the risks associated with facelifts?

Surgical risks are greatly reduced by choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon to perform your facelift. However, all surgeries have some inherent risks, including anesthesia risks, bleeding, swelling, infection, deep vein thrombosis, fluid buildup, nerve injury, numbness, poor wound healing, skin discoloration, poor aesthetic results, and others. Our team will discuss these risks in more detail during your private consultation to ensure you are fully informed.
