What is the surgical technique for breast reduction?

Depending on your insurance coverage, the procedure may be performed at our office surgical facility or at the surgical pavilion of Huntington Hospital. Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient treatment and is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on several factors, including the degree of reduction. The areola and nipple repositioning takes time, and we never rush the surgery – we want to achieve a lovely, natural result. At your initial consultation, we can discuss scars and what to expect. As tissues must be removed and reshaped during your breast reduction surgery, surgical scars will occur. However, we place the incisions so that any scars are invisible when wearing low-cut tops, dresses, swimsuits, or bras, and the scars fade over time.

Based on the complexity of the size and level of the reduction, the incision may be placed around the areola, combined with a vertical line down the center of the lower breast, or an inverted-T incision may be used. Excess breast fat and tissue is reduced, and the remaining tissues reshaped and tightened.

What to expect from breast reduction surgery?

After your breast reduction sugery is completed, you will be monitored closely in our private recovery room and then released home to begin the healing process. A compression bra will be provided for a few days to improve blood circulation to the breasts during the first phase of recovery. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are expected and can be easily managed with prescribed pain medication. Ensure you have plenty of time to rest and heal at home.

You may shower 48 hours after your procedure. Our surgeons will advise you to avoid activities that require you to bend over or reach above your head or lift anything heavy, including children and pets. Most stitches placed during a breast reduction dissolve on their own, and others will be removed 7 to 10 days after surgery. Nipple sensitivity or numbness is common, but sensation usually returns over the next several months. You will also need to continue wearing a surgical bra for up to 6 weeks.

Over the first few months after surgery, your breasts will settle, and the after-surgery effects will dissipate.
