What Is Liposuction?

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction in Long Island?

Fat removal surgery is an appropriate treatment for patients at an ideal weight but has stubborn pockets of fat that will not resolve with diet or exercise. If you are considering liposuction, you should not have excessive skin laxity as liposuction does not tighten skin, but removes fat cells. It is also essential to know that liposuction is not a treatment for weight loss. At the time of your surgery consultation, our plastic surgeons will discuss your expectations.

What Is the Liposuction Surgical Technique?

Liposuction is performed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia. A small incision is placed through the skin so that a cannula can be inserted through the incision. A cannula is a tool that makes it easier to release the fatty tissue that is being suctioned. After the desired amount of fat deposits are reduced, one of our plastic surgeons seals the small incision.

Based on the number of sections treated, your Long Island liposuction procedure may require several hours. In the recovery suite, your post-operation nurse will assist you with any discomfort or pain and look after your incision sites, and then you are discharged.

What Can I Expect From Liposuction Recovery?

It’s typical to have bruising and swelling for one to two weeks, and you will have any stitches removed within seven days of your procedure. The most important thing to do after liposuction is to give your body time to rest and heal. Once you return to work after your surgery, you should do your best to take it slow and easy. To increase your strength and stamina, perform very light workouts and go for walks as advised by our plastic surgeon. Keep in mind that you may see some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take about six months until your new body contour and shape are complete.
